The Pediatric Emergency Center at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital provides rapid, comprehensive and compassionate emergency services in child-friendly environments. Dedicated teams of affiliated, pediatric emergency medicine specialists, surgeons, nurses and other pediatric critical care specialists collaborate to deliver quality care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Level I Expertise in Pediatric Emergency Care

The Pediatric Emergency Center at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital holds the distinction of being a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, certified to provide comprehensive emergency services for everything from minor injuries to severe trauma. The certification as a Level I center requires the continuous availability of specialized trauma surgeons and immediate access to essential subspecialties such as neurosurgery, bone marrow transplantation and intensive care units.

This designation is maintained through rigorous standards, including 24/7 surgical coverage, adherence to strict protocols and ongoing evaluation by the American College of Surgeons to ensure all care metrics and guidelines are consistently met. Our affiliated team includes dedicated program directors who oversee these efforts to provide the highest level of emergency care to our pediatric patients.

Comprehensive Pediatric Emergency Services

The Pediatric Emergency Center at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital is an integral component of the prestigious Red Duke Trauma Institute at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, which provides the highest level of trauma care to both adult and pediatric patients and offers a full spectrum of services. Because we are integrated with an adult Level I Trauma Center, we are uniquely positioned to deliver coordinated, comprehensive care for families during multi-generational emergencies, such as car accidents or domestic incidents.

We also provide Ground Ambulance Service within a 300-mile radius, Memorial Hermann Life Flight® Air Ambulance for distances up to 150 miles and Fixed-wing Air Transport for international and long-distance transfers.
  • Advanced care facilities, equipped with 15 emergency beds, a dedicated forensic nursing treatment room and complete imaging technologies like MRI, CT, X-ray and ultrasound.
  • Full spectrum of pediatric subspecialists, including cardiovascular care, neurosurgery, dentistry/facial trauma, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pediatric stroke, burns, trauma, oncology and endocrinology, all supported by dedicated pediatric nurses, board-certified emergency care doctors, Child Life specialists, social workers and respiratory specialists.
  • Specialized pediatric dental and maxillofacial services, serving as the only center in Houston with 24/7 pediatric dental and oral maxillofacial surgical care. Services range from urgent dental infections to complex craniofacial traumas.

Personalized, Family-Centered Emergency Care

We understand that every child's needs are unique, which is why our emergency care is tailored to address the specific medical and emotional needs of each patient. We do this through:

  • Integrated care teams: Our teams work closely with a variety of specialists and maintain detailed care plans for patients with chronic illnesses, enhancing our ability to provide targeted treatments.
  • Family involvement: We actively encourage family involvement in all aspects of care. Our approach to family-centered care is to be as open as possible, allowing families to be present during procedures and supporting them even in critical situations, such as during CPR or other lifesaving interventions.
  • Child life specialists: Our Child Life specialists are trained to use techniques such as distraction and kid-friendly explanations of procedures to help reduce anxiety and the need for sedation. They are experienced at reading children’s cues and adapting their approach to the needs of each patient.
  • Pediatric forensic nursing services: Our specialized forensic nursing team offers compassionate care for children who are suspected victims of abuse. This service focuses on sensitive case handling and prioritizing both medical and psychological well-being.
  • Education and community engagement: We strive to be active in community education, providing essential resources and guidance to help families understand when emergency care is needed and how to prevent common accidents through practical safety tips.
