The Patient Experience

Because Rockets Orthopedic Hospital was designed as a dedicated orthopedic and spine facility, the building accommodates patients who have mobility impairments, with extra-wide doors and corridors and extra-large bathrooms for wheelchairs and walkers. All 64 spacious, beautifully furnished patient rooms are private, and a comfortably appointed waiting room for friends and family is located adjacent to 10 state-of-the-art surgical suites. The hospital also offers two-room VIP suites and interpretation services are available.

Over the past five years, Rockets Orthopedic Hospital has ranked above the 90th percentile on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, the first national standardized, publicly reported survey of patients’ perspectives of hospital care.

Meet the Team

Orthopedic Surgeon  – Dr. Ken Mathis

Kenneth MathisDr. Ken Mathis earned his medical degree at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He completed his internship at the University of Missouri in Columbia and his residency at Louisiana State University Medical School in Shreveport. This was followed by a fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Board certified in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Mathis has been in practice since 1992. He specializes in total joint reconstruction.

Dr. Mathis has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Texas Orthopedic Association and the Houston Orthopedic Society.

Additionally, he has received many recognitions and awards over the years, including the Patients’ Choice Award and the Compassionate Doctor Award.

How It Works

  • An interested candidate first speaks with our navigator, who confirms eligibility, explains the process, and collects required information.
  • Once administrative eligibility has been confirmed, the patient will be scheduled for a surgical consult to determine clinical eligibility.
  • If the individual is determined to be a good candidate for surgery, he or she will officially be enrolled in the bundle program. If an individual is determined not be a good candidate, an alternate course of treatment is recommended.
  • Pre-surgery education delivered virtually helps the patient prepare for the procedure.
  • Surgery is typically offered as an outpatient procedure, but in some cases will involve an overnight hospital stay.
  • Following surgery, patients will participate in virtual-based physical therapy through a digital platform that includes recovery goals, video-based education and messaging, reporting on pain levels, and activation of daily plans and recovery pathways prescribed by their physician.
