Dr. Schefler earned her medical degree at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. She completed both a residency and fellowship at the University of Miami (Florida)’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute-Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital. She underwent additional training at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Her professional honors include the Society of Heed Fellows Fellow Award (2009), the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship Award (2009), the Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation Award (2008), Weill Medical College Honors in Research (2003), the Edward Norton Prize in Ophthalmology at Weill Medical College (2003), the Dean's Research Award at Weill Medical College (2003) and the ARVO/National Eye Institute Travel Fellowship Grant (2002).

A resident of Houston, Dr. Schefler is married and the mother of two children. In her leisure time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and children, tennis and traveling.
