Surgeons and nurses affiliated with Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital recently marked a significant milestone by performing their 1,000th open-cardiac procedure since the program began in 2018.
Dr. Cesar Nahas, an affiliated cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, was recruited to join Memorial Hermann Southeast with the goal of establishing a premiere cardiac surgery program. He was joined by Dr. Michael Lopez, an affiliated cardiothoracic surgeon, and together they have seen the program grow by leaps and bounds.
“Our goal is to provide high-quality, compassionate cardiac surgery in a personalized setting. I was very lucky to have most of the people I worked with at the time join me in this new endeavor. I was also fortunate to be able to work with hospital leaders that had faith in us,” said Nahas. “We have touched many lives, and our patients continue to express their gratitude particularly towards the nurses who provide them with exceptional care. As our program grows, our focus on providing the best outcomes for our patients remains the same.”
Memorial Hermann is one of the world’s largest providers of cardiovascular care, treating more than 200,000 patients a year. Memorial Hermann Southeast has been recognized by the American Heart Association and the Joint Commission for excellence in cardiac care, particularly in the treatment of a ST-elevation myocardial infarction or STEMI, a heart attack that affects the lower chambers of the heart.
